5 Steps to Achieving Success On Your Own Terms
In today’s world success has become quite the buzz word. Its’ definition varies from person to person, but loosely speaking success can be seen as ones desire to achieve, attain, or accomplish something either of great worth or purpose.
Chasing success or in some cases, the look of success has become part of the American story. We indulge in rags to riches stories. We look at famous billionaires and millionaires as inspirational figures. Most of us dream of being the next woman or man to have a million dollar idea and make it big. We desire to achieve some level of success that changes our lifestyle beyond what are we used to.
With so much focus on being successful, sometimes it is easy to feel overwhelmed and even get lost in the very dreams we are working so hard to achieve. So how does one become successful without exhausting themselves in the chase?
Upgrade your faith
To be successful you have to be prepared to be tested, doubted, and challenged. You have to be willing to celebrate your wins, and also battle through your losses. In order to do that you will need an incredible amount of faith. Faith in yourself, faith in your abilities, and faith that even when you don’t immediately see results that they are coming. One of my favorite quotes is by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., “Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” So the first step to achieving success, is super-sizing your faith.
Define success on your own terms
Success you will find looks different for each person, and part of the journey is defining what it looks and feels like for you. Don’t get caught up comparing yourself to others. Create your own vision and carve out your own path to success. You do this by determining what your passions are, and getting clear on where you would like to see those passions take you. Once you are clear on that, the next step is setting goals. This ensures that you can the achieve the success you want to see in your life, without getting burnt out trying to run in a lane that wasn’t meant for you. Take some time to develop realistic goals, and set a plan that is in line with your vision. Defining success for yourself; free of comparison will help you achieve it on your own terms.
Fine tune your focus
Long-term success requires planning. In order to truly achieve anything you have to give your full attention to it. You have to work your plan, and focus on your goal targets. Therefore, in order to be successful you have to get focused, and eliminate distractions. Understand that it’s 1% ideas and 99% execution that leads to success. It’s fine to have great ideas, big plans and high ambitions, but without a plan to execute any of it you will just be chasing your tail. In order to stop running in circles get a plan and get focused.
Learn how to accept and grow from failure
Failure is inevitable it’s a part of life. The key to being able to move past failures, is to see them as learning experiences. Don’t get caught up mourning your losses, or allowing it to stop you from moving forward. Take a moment to assess why the situation or project failed, make note of lessons learned, and create a new path. In order to be successful, you have to accept failure is a possibility when you are attempting to achieve big things. It is how you recover from failure that will determine how successful you will be long-term. When you are chasing success you may stumble, but shake it off and get back in the game.
Dig deep and prepare to work hard
Unless you are the heir to the throne, hard work is something you can not avoid on the road to success. You have to be willing to put the work in to achieve your dreams. No one is going to hand you anything in this world, you get what you work for. If you have a goal, it’s up to you to do the work to achieve it. The key is to understand when you need to step away to regroup. Don’t let the hustle cause you to burn out. Be kind to yourself; understand you are powerful and capable – you got this!
In the end, your ambition and determination will take you places. Chase after your dreams, but don’t let the chase break you.
