Goal Setting

Looking Ahead to the New Year

newyearplan, goal setting, smart goals

As of today, there are 113 days left in 2015! Does that freak you out as much as it does me? The end of the year always bring about a time of reflection. It’s an opportunity to celebrate your accomplishments, and assess areas of your life both personally and professionally where you weren’t so successful at meeting your goals. Similar to a yearly self-assessment that one does for an employer, I like to do a similar review of my personal life. This process greatly helps to inform the goal setting strategy that will be put in place to create even bigger wins in the New Year.

There are still a few months left to the year, so I know the tendency would be to wait to begin this process. However, starting the goal setting process early gives you an opportunity to not only plan ahead, but hopefully also double down on your fourth quarter goals to ensure you end 2015 with a bang.

On rule of thumb when setting goals, is to really take the time to think through and vet a list of items that you want to accomplish. From there, the goals you set to reach your targets should be S.M.A.R.T. In other words, you should make each goal Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. This method of goal setting increases your chances for attainment. I have found this method also helps me determine the difference between the tasks that might be associated with accomplishing a goal, and my actual high-level goals. I found this great one-pager that you can find here, that gives more detail on the SMART goal process.

This year has been incredibly challenging and also quite rewarding for me. Launching GIRL GET IT has been one of the highlights. There is still much more work to be done, but I am excited about what is to come. Building a strong network of women all committed to the goal of advancing individually and together, is a mission I am very much committed to going into the New Year.

I will be taking some time in the coming weeks to flush out my own SMART goals. In planning for that process, I would love your feedback on what you like to see more of here on the site. You can leave a comment on this post, or Tweet me your thoughts @girlgetitblog. I am also, really interested in hearing about all of your 2015 successes, and what you have planned for the New Year – so please don’t be a stranger!

Cheers to a brilliant year ahead!
